If the "dmesg" didn't yield the result of drivers or VLC didn't work, again, let us know. If it is working at that point but not working in a particular app, let us know and maybe someone can help. Click the triangle next to it and if it gives you any option (for me it is /dev/video0 ) select that then lower in the window hit play. Try VLC - Ctrl+C should open capture device window. If it says uvcvideo has drivers in use for the cam it is at least installed and should work. Search for "webcam" by hitting Shift+Ctrl+F.
